Mosquitoes use still water to breed. So one thing you should try to do to avoid mosquitoes is to remove standing water on your property.
If you can’t empty or remove things that hold water you can use Mosquito Dunks® and Bits® to kill off any mosquito larvae that could be breeding there.
- Bti, short for Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, a natural bacterium that occurs in soil.
- It is so effective on larvae it has been used in mosquito control for more than 30 years.
According to the EPA, spores from Bti produce toxins that only affect the larvae of the mosquito, blackfly and fungus gnat.
Bti spores cause the larvae to stop eating and die and only works against actively feeding larvae. The easiest way to use Bti, is by getting Mosquito Dunks® or Bits®. They can be used in rain barrels, fountains, ornamental ponds, and other standing water that is not in use.
