Winter Mosquito Activity in Mississippi

Ever heard a mosquito buzzing in winter? You’re not imagining it.
Some mosquito species stay active during mild winter stretches in Mississippi. According to Jerome Goddard of Mississippi State University Extension, not all mosquitoes behave the same — different species emerge at different times, feed on different animals, and are active day or night.

Winter MosquitoesOne winter standout is Culiseta inornata, often called the winter marsh mosquito. It’s large (up to ½ inch long) and is primarily active in cooler months. If Mississippi sees several warm days in a row, other mosquito species that overwinter as adults can also become active and start biting.

🧪 Good to know:

  • Mosquitoes are most active when temperatures rise above 50°F.

What you can do

  • Dump standing water, even in winter
  • Use EPA-registered repellents on warmer days
